John,

Get well soon buddy, I saw where you posted about all the low life/crackheads/illegals in the ER, you should of wore a Border Patrol/INS hat into the ER and they would of been no waiting all would be gone  and a nice atmosphere for you in your distress.

Do what the military did... get rid of those gear driven dinosaurs and use a hydraulic pump and motor!

Good thought Steve.
Hydraulics are heavy and they need to be cooled or watch out. They also rely more on horsepower rather than gear ratio which means more weight.

This one I am working on will be 700:1, you don't even need a motor to pull a massive boulder, could turn it by hand, just might take you till diner or maybe Christmas depending on how far it needs to move. - ha-ha

I just had the splined shaft turned down on the ends, have a few more pieces to have machined and I can start in on this winch. I might work on it some over the summer, time permitting.
Meticulous care goes into the building of such pent-up torque and power, the kind that moves even the mossback boulders. :D

Just came across one of the units my dad made over thirty years ago and it was still in service, how bout that.

I will try to get some pictures as I progress (or should I say if) and make some posts here.
