Innards of a Boulder Winch

Postby CalGoldDredger » Sun Apr 17, 2011 10:29 am

I thought I would share a picture of what I have completed thus far. The drive train- Gearbox, middle engagement shaft with dog, and the spool all contained within 20". The total gear ratio on this one works out to 864:1.
Went a little torqier so I could use a smaller engine 2.5 HP. This next winch will be smaller and considerably lighter. Took me a few month to get to this point but plenty of time and a heap of projects to keep me busy.

Hope everyone/all are voicing the recommendation that the CDFG toss out those there proposed regulations and leave in place the 1994 based regs as they were so I can get the chance to try this new winch out.

Been a working on the winch a little here and there, weather permiting, sure is cold today. I don't care what anyone says, I will finish it and very well intend to use it.
Got the thin wall tubing down pat but still don't like using .035 wire very easy to burn through have to keep it moving at least with the heat turned up as I like it. Wish I had some .030 or better yet .025.
Not bad looking welds for NR211, might I say, and strength is even better. They have to be for a winch.

I am sure if Hoser wrote a book, it would be a best seller for sure. One thing I love about John is his no-holds-barred honesty. Really, there are a lot of us who would love to read of Hoser's exploits...
Tons a au 2 u john.
