Alternate pump idea

Postby impfected » Sun Feb 21, 2010 7:31 am

Hi All,
I was joking with a friend about building our own dredge the other day when I came up with an idea.
Has anyone ever used the drive from a jetski to power a dredge? I mean, that pump has to produce some serious kick to sling those buggers as fast as they do and they are very cheap used ($150-300)
My thought was an aluminum boat with a jet drive and some sort of three way valve to switch the thrust from the stern (in travel mode) to the sluice/suction device in dredge mode. A self powered dredge of sorts.
Silly idea, but was fun to joke about high speed dredge and run, boat trips ;-)

I haved turned the jet around on my dredge after removing the suction hose, fire up the motor and let the jet of water push me and dredge loaded with gear...

Rigging the plumbing ain't the problem. Them suckers are all 2-stroke engines...they really suck up the gas. Not cheap! Plus, the enviros will pitch a fit at the oil slick that it leaves behind when you are running from a fixed position.
