gold/pyrite separation

Postby Disgruntled » Wed Jan 26, 2011 11:58 pm

anyone got some easy ways to separate the two?

ive read you can soak them in hydroclhoric acid, as it wont harm gold, but will eat the pyrite,. know that from when i played with aqua regia.

know you can use mercury to an extent, but IMO thats about like selling your soul to the devil.

was told you can burn the pyrite down some in a fire?

and that you can just be realy good at panning and pan it off,.

reason i ask is the place i want to go here, which is an old mine, has a bunch of pyrite mixed in it in places,. lots of quarts and other nice things aswell

DG, we have a lot of pyrite at one of the locations we frequent and panning it the way to handle it. pyrite has an SG of 10 and gold of 19.
we've been river classifying with a sluice or hopper sluice, and panning our concentrates.
