Good Move, having a professional look at it, especially if there's any doubt.
I was just about to recommend that, coin shop guys and jewelers are no help at all and if it were gold they would try to offer 30% of spot to buy it.
Maybe you found something out of the ordinary, you'll find out. Still appears or looks like Mica in the pictures to me.

I vote mica. You said it was flakey, that is the key. Mica is soft and you can seperate it in very thin layers which are mostly transparent. Pyrite would shatter and gold would squish, neither are flakey or transparent. Mica wont melt and is very lightweight, may even float

The verdict is in, mica indeed.
well at least the experience has definitely got me interested in panning, guess I'll look up where in california are some good places for a newb to start looking

That appears to be mica or leverite. do a specific gravity test.

my guess is the SG is 2.3 Mica equiv and not 19.3

Truthfully if you pan it like normal it will float out of the pan.
