Sluicing In My Backyard With Garden Hoses...

Postby C-17A » Sun Mar 07, 2010 9:16 am

Greetings Gold Dredgers,

Well, if there's a will there's a way.......

I had a bucket of cons in my garage I wanted to play with, but the loads of black sand, although fun to play with for a while.....sure challenged me to exhibit perfect panning technique, and after several hours got a bit old.

I looked around locally for a small stream flowing enough water to sluice, but nothing close to the house. So, I had my teenage daughter help me set up my Le Trap sluice on blocks, and ran 2 garden hoses for water flow in the front, and sluiced my cons into a tub in my back yard.

Took a little playing with the water speed and feed, but in the end I was very happy. After a while I could see fine gold trapped in the first 3 riffles of my Le Trap. When all done, we did one clean up and I panned out the gold. WAY faster than hand panning it all!

One thing the Le Trap does VERY well, as it's so wide, is it spreads the black sand out very thin, allowing even micro gold to fall out and get trapped in the riffles quickly. Same theory for large gold pans with wide, flat bottoms. Gotta let that gold get to the bottom fast, and the thinner the material is spread, the faster it will settle, & less chance of losing gold panning, or out the back of your sluice. :P

Pic attached. Notice a little mercury on several pieces.

Happy sluicing!!

The way you worded your subject title, I thought you were hosing your backyard through a sluice.
I got to give you guys lots of credit packing those heavy cons home and meticulously workin' them for hours, trying to recover every last speck of gold. Image

John,

Back east sometimes all we find is specks and we don't want them to go to waste, and it gives us something to do with we can get out to the gold!!! :D

I was kind of hoping for a bikini shot of the teenage daughter. I guess that says I'm a "dirty old Man".

I plead guilty! ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

Hey Randy... I have a great opprtunity to take a picture of my backyard (but I doubt I will). I too have been going thru cons over the last few weeks when I had the energy. my wife says it looks like a real mess with all the buckets, sluices, pans, classifiers, bowls and reconcentrators. I say it proves I'm a miner and not a landscaper. I've been doing the water hose and sluice thing too. I keep wondering though that maybe I could set up my honcoop.

with a big enough pump and set as a recirculating closed loop system ,i dont see why you couldnt! itll be quicker anyway!and if you had a auto feeder you could set it up and go take a short nap inbetween refilling the feeder or just sit in the ole Fla. sunshine!
