Mercury capture

Postby poprivit2 » Sat Jan 05, 2013 9:51 am

Was seeing that mercury price was way up from a few years ago too.
Have been thinking about catching the fine stuff that might be available.
The exaust fan over my stove has a very fine expanded metal sandwich to catch grease in the air.
Seams to me the older style filters were copper. If not one could make one that would be after the sluice end with a gap between
the end and a space fot the gravel etc to fall away. Send these in to reclaim the mercury and return to be reused over and over.
If you were already setup for this distilling then you could roll up the filter and stick it in the retourt.
just a thought..
Any way filtering the water would be a feather in two hats.

Roger thats a very interesting idea! maybe a dredge could be outfitted with this setup for mercury reclamation in California??? there used tobe a copper scrub pad ,like brillo pads (maybe it was from Brillo??) that could be used as the mercury filter element?? good idea!

Russ,

Copper scrubbing pads are still made, Chore Boy makes 100% copper pads and cloths.

(it says in the description at the above site that this is "A non-metallic scouring cloth that is as flexible as a dishcloth" how can it be non-metallic and still be stated at the same site as "Chore Boy Ultimate Copper Scrubbers are machine knit from pure copper" I think the website designer thinks that only steel is the only metal that is metallic.

3M also makes copper pads but I read that they will still rust as mentioned in the warning section of this site, so they must be only copper plated.

You can also get copper mesh.

If I was to make one, I would use some 3/4 '' PVC making a 2' x 3' assembled frame with 2, or more depending how long it was made, hole thru middle boat fenders for flotation. The PVC would pass thru the hole in the fender, then some of that copper mesh tied together to make a nice thick mat. That could be tie wraped to the frame. Tow the frame down stream about 6'' away from the sluice end. the outflow should keep the "filter' off by the flow.
This would also slow the discharge slightly and might reduce the turbity.
A piece of expanded? in front like a little plow dould divert the more energetic rocks from making it into the filter.
If it even worked a little it would be cash in the pocket, And a lot of thumbs up too.
I'll try to draw one up and post. along with bumper sizes etc.

Zink wool will work better at attracting HG and is about 1/3 the cost of copper

POP!
ps looked like it worked !!YEA!!
pps by the way it is like the rolling dredge and can be rolled up the bank to camp or ?? due to the hole in the middle floats.
with spacers between the bumpers to keep from rubbing, like 2-3 x pvc size pvc.
