MSHA is someone to respect. They can shut you down in a heartbeat and close your doors. I've been checked and fined when we worked at a limestone mine. It's yes sir, no sir, thank you sir!

There's a bunch of them out there and they can change your life in a heartbeat.

FMCSA is the one that forced me into retirement.

Be Safe.

Right now MSHA has a portion of the Stillwater mine in MT. shut down. the area that is closed
is where a couple of vehicles caught on fire. The area where one of the miners was killed last
week is not shut down. Yes they have a lot of power, but as I have stated before, if the miners
did not have them, working conditions would be much worse. And No they are not perfect.
After working underground in a gold mine for 10 years and knowing the inspectors personally,
I can say the did more good than harm. All the companies want is production, money is the
driving force.

Getterdone:

I totally agree. I worked the construction industry all my life and have been checked by them all. I watched the inspectors walk by serious violations only to stop and cite some minor violation just to show they were there checking the site. Most of the stuff was in gray areas of the code and not very clear on the interpretation. But as workers, it's out only protection from the hurry up and get it done mentality of most corporations. In 30 years, I only walked off the job one time when a super refused to stop a dangerous condition. When I told him about the problem and asked him to check it out, his reply was I guess I don't want to go there and have a look then! Turned and walked away.
