Too Old To Dredge?

Postby libertydave » Tue Feb 25, 2014 8:04 pm

After selling Liberty Resources last year I later sold all of my dredges. And last week I got an email on the equipment ad asking me "why"...at seventy was I too old to dredge? Well, after a half dozen surgeries and a new defib-pacemaker I decided simply to call it quits for dredging...however I still plan to use my little high-banker. This was also not because of any mining prohibition fear nor an anti-dredging regulatory premonition.

After all, I still believe the prez when last year he told us..."If you like your dredge, you can keep your dredge".

;) In what country did what prez say that?? Just googled and nuttn' man. I'm going through withdrawls as down to 4 and a highbanker,3 sluices and 3 detectors. Mine till ya die as what a fantastic way to go with a big :D fat ol'grin on your face. In any way shape or form is all that matters as at this late date(past 60) why change something that works. I've modified to no more waist weights and gone vest/ankle to compensate for 42 years a lead slapping and hangn' on my back but able and willing anyhow. HMMM Colorado is a calln' I believe and it ain't for no rocky mountain high---gold does that---oops a shot or 2 now and then helps with the ol'rheumatize  -John

I'm with you Dave. I'm 70 also. The last few years have made a huge difference in what I can do. No pacemaker, just plenty of pills to keep the ticker under control. The wife has larger problems and they are having trouble getting her under control. My 4" is going to Ed this year leaving me with a 2" no air. I can handle that I think with Corky's or Dave's help. I looked at the posting the other day for the 2 1/2" Proline with air and almost asked if he wanted to trade it straight across for my 4" but then decided it was too big fo me anyway.

I have 100's of hours of video tape gold prospecting to go through and I can live vicariously for years. I've had a great life prospecting so slowing down doesn't bother me as much.

Leonard, These days I too have more pill bottles than I can count. Decades back I'd go to the local drug store and asked them for a couple of small pill bottles...used them for storing my recovered fine gold. Drilled a hole in the cap and inserted a small eye bolt. Attached it to a length bungee cord...the ones like they give you are the casinos...and hung it from my belt loop.

Now-a-days these prescription bottles are full of expensive and strange sounding chemicals for all of my 'aging' ailments. I sure long for the good old days. Having good health is golden.

Yup, just cutting back on some of the harder labor such as lawn mowing, heavy lifting and flinging X-large cobbles around but I still plan a few golden 'adventures' this summer. Oh Leonard and Russ....I did not tell you that I bought a new gold detector...Garrett ATX that will accompany my little high-banker combo. The best to you and all of you guys. Take good care of yourselves.

I don't think it has to do with age, but what this old body can stand to do. Each year I wonder if this will be my last year.
So far even with the problems with my back, I am going to try and make it for another 6 years when I will turn 80.
But then again it also depends on the wife who is in charge of panning what I dredge up. It is a team effort and
that is makes it a joy. She really enjoys watching me walk on water when I find a nice picker and bring it to her.

TOO many pills will kill ya as side effects from one make ya take more, then more side effects then take more---like a UN merry go round with the md's,pharmacy and pill makers making fortunes upon fortunes. I take a bit a norco to dull pain and not remove it. Even got me a back shot so I won't start down that pill road to death by pharmacopia. I know some folks absolutely MUST take some but docs greed has driven them crazy with all the $$$cash from drug mfgrs., free vacations, free cars etc. Kalif has made public the facts on kickbacks as MDs now emulate crooked politicians. I dumped a new doc last year when I heard him perscribing the same RX to 4 patients in a row-then me=BS. Thin walls reveals all. He got over $386,000 in cash + perks.Another tried to do blood pressures wrong also repeatedly. I'd leave and a nurse I know would check and PERFECT as usual-even cross checked her at pharmacy machines. Been a long road and a long way to go yet with some really fun folks I've met here. And I'll definately chug a shot to thatn'-John 8-)

Hoser, You are likely quite right on that, the drug companies are not in the business for your health and the quality of life...they are in business to make money. I know that a lot of drugs have benefit for what they treat however how about the long term effects? Check out the night time news and see all of the pricy drug commercials...then listen to the potential side effects. Scary!

My gold mining partner (and dear wife) has fought a losing battle for the last fifteen years with lupus, fibromyalgia and a host of other immune deficiency diseases and she has been on a dozen medications for many years. I now believe that her declining health is largely because of chemicals we've ingested, the lack of natural foods and adequate minerals and vitamins AND the long term effects from the drugs she has taken for a decade to help her with her diseases.

Leonard, I apologize for digressing from mining and gold with this subject.
