Funny Gold Mining Memories

Postby libertydave » Mon Feb 18, 2019 3:56 pm

We were at a GPAA Gold Show in 1987 listening to a speaker talking on fine gold recovery. He suggested burning your dredge sluice matt at the end of the season to dislodge any residual gold. A former dredging friend (I'll call him "Jerry") took this advice literally. He went home and burned his sluice matt, which was made from a type of plastic fiber. It melted into a blackened, solid ball.

Anyone have a similar story...a good mining idea gone bad? Let's hear it.

A funny true story:

I was at a Washington DEF Rally way back when. The Forrest Service had a presentation scheduled and I sat in on it. Mainly so there would be someone in the audience. They were talking about dredging and they put up a picture of a 4" dredge running in a small creek. All of the water in the creek was running through the dredge. The presenter said "this is probably too small a creek to run this size of dredge". I looked closely at the picture, saw my screwdriver sticking out of the hole on the top of the float and I said "Hey, that's my dredge".

They had taken the picture from my web page at http://golddredger.com/kaufmancreek/kaufman2.htm

They hemmed and hawed a little and then I got to present my side of the operation.

I took a picture of their flip chart showing my dredge. I don't know where it is though. That was quite a few years ago.

Now that a funny story. Do you think that you stopped him from stealing other peoples photos to support the claims he was making? BOO NFS

It's to small for Douglas Creek but another one of Leonard's claims in Colorado (?) I think it's the same claim that the C.C.C. guys got snowed on over night and had fun getting out . My memory is fading fast here in Misery!

You were partially right Russ. That was Kaufman Creek. It was a little known creek that had some gold. Not much but it was easy acess and we never saw anyone else looking for gold. It was a great place to spend a few days.
Here's the story on it.
