:?: Question, dick, what is west of Cal for dredging??? I know North is Oregon and Washington but both are very restrictive and only allow toy dredges. I want to dredge not play around.

Yep, all figured out except which dredge to bring and that will be dependant apon the timing of my APMA permit.
If it isn't approved before I leave then I will be limited to a 6" this year. Always next year and might want to get used to dredging there first anyways.
We are headed to Fairbanks area, dad's friend has some claims up there and was kindly enough to allow us to dredge on them, dad is still good for something (sorry dad).

Hey CGD:

To answer you I'd look at ID, Western WY & MT.

As long as you have an in up there, then I say go for it, most of the placer was worked pertty hard, but like Nolan Creek, there a lot of gold still in the ground and weatering out every spring. The area is good up there and like they say, look where gold has been found. By having some areas to dredge, you take a lot of the risk out of the trip from the equation. Then you put actually finding some gold in your plans as a viable option. That water is really cold up there and make sure your geared up to deal with it. A full face mask and a good hood will be a good investment. If your in deep water, the current will be something that you will have to deal with. I haven't been north of Anchorage, but if I was gonna prospect it would be up in that area and east of Fairbanks.

That being said, if I was in my 20's and willing to work my tail off, get by with little sleep, and wasn't afraid of getting dirty and smelly. I would be looking to get hired on for shares as a set netter's hand, a deck hand on a drift boat in the area from Kenai down to Homer. It really helps to know someone to get hired, but they need more help than they can get and if your there early and find some body to want you, then there is money to be made.

The money in Ak is made in the commercial fishing industry and in the oil fields. Two of my friends up there worked for AF&G, so I'm pertty sure I'm not blowing smoke at you. I do gotta admit that at 64, I wish I was doing the same thing your planning. Nobody makes it today by sitting on their butt and wishing!

Nuff said.

Last time I checked, Idaho, Wyoming and Montana were all EAST of Califormia. LOL  At first I thought you were talking ocean dredging off the California coast.

Your alright, Dick, and trust me I do bust it and I am ready to dredge again, Cal or no Cal.
 How about low cal, sorry, I am on the hunt and happy once again.

Thanks for the Tips, very neighborly. :)

That is OK, as my second thought would have been Hawaii, and that is a very plesant thought about now. Not much for gold but a good vacation from Kalifornia.

Thanks, I will give it my best as always.

About 5 yrs ago I was up around the South Fork of the Clearwater just outside of Elk City, Id.
A local claim owner was tellin' me that there are strick rules on dredging the streams that feed it and the Salmon.
I sampled the Newsome and the American, then the owner took me out to Crooked creek. It feeds into the Salmon.
He had six claims for sale, but the one on Newsome looked the best.
Going away, there was still an unanswered question about dredging on the Newsome or the American. :?
I didn't buy any claims. ;)
Yes, I found color. Not a lot, but then I was only usin' a pan.
I have done so much, with so little, for so long, that I am now qualified to do anything with nothing.
Now, I just have to find the time to put the dang thing together.
