Illegal immigrants to get Illinois driver's licenses

- Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel is praising a House committee's action to develop a program allowing illegal immigrants to get driver's licenses.

The Democrat says the proposal would make Chicago and Illinois "more welcoming to immigrants."

A House transportation committee moved legislation to the floor Monday. It would allow illegal immigrants to get temporary licenses if they are trained and show year-long Illinois residency.

Emanuel says roads would be safer with trained, tested and insured drivers.

The licenses could not be used for identification or for law enforcement to target illegal immigrants for deportation.

Emanuel says the proposal would help "recent immigrants step out of the shadows" and be in a better position to contribute to communities and the economy.

not that i agree withit but i understand this "illegals" drivers license will look different than regular licenses.this will probly come quickly for any "dem" state for votes! why would any illegal want one of these is beyond me. anyone can get a international drivers license.

i have a questin. once you get on in Illinois, can you thing go to what ever state your living in and get that fake id, in a drivers licenses there. if so indiana would register them to vote. its all done at the dmv.

im waiting for California AND Illinois to apply for federal aid to bail them out! it appears to me that some states are sitting back and watching for this outcome so they can stick their greedy hands out for thier free stuff at the expense of America and her people!

here is some more on it. I can tell you a guy that is running round with out insurance, and driving with out a license is not likely to get them when it becomes legal. its more expense for him. just hit them and run is cheaper you may not get caught.

as soon as these become availiable. they will be copied and passed around! just like insurance cards. digital camaras and computors will do the rest!

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Some Indiana lawmakers are hoping to provide driver's licenses to undocumented immigrants. But not everyone in the community agrees.

We talked to local residents regarding the possibility of all immigrants receiving driver’s licenses.

Some think it was a good idea for them to be able to get licenses. But others think it’s a mistake.

“If they’re illegal to begin with, I don’t see what the point is,” said Jim.

“They come here and take our jobs away, why give them more rights?” said Mike.

Both residents requested not to reveal their identities.

Indiana's Budget Director calculates illegal immigrants have cost Indiana over $130 million.

It's estimated there are up to 300,000 immigrants in the state.

And now, some lawmakers are hoping to allow undocumented immigrants to get a license to drive.

In recent years, the GOP pushed through tough measures against immigrants who work in Ind. and their employers.

In 2011, Indiana legislature adopted a law to deny illegal immigrants in-state tuition rates to attend college.

Some lawmakers argue it's an issue of public safety not to grant licenses to immigrants.

They say we're better off knowing who is on the road.

Indiana State Police Sergeant Joe Watts said they trust their legislators to make a good decision.

“First of all, the Indiana State Police Department does not offer an official opinion on what laws should be law and what laws should not be law. What we do is, we listen to or legislators. The legislators are the voice of the people and for the people. And if they enact a certain instance into law, we will enforce that,” said Sgt. Watts.

But for now, the community is still divided on what would be best for America.
