Dredge ban hits public schools

Postby Plumas » Thu Aug 05, 2010 9:03 am

Here in Plumas County claim owners pay an annual property tax assessment on mining claims which is earmarked to help fund our public schools.

Our County tax Assessor, well aware that dredging is the only method that most claims can be profitably worked has reduced this years mining claim tax assessments by 60% on larger claims, while claims 40 acres and under are now exempt from this tax. Knocked quite a chunk off my annual tax bill.

Good for me, but multiply my savings by a factor of 1,500 (Rough number of claims in the county) it's a huge hit for our public schools which are struggling to keep teachers and programs going.

Something the guvenor never thought about I'll bet.

All my claims in Shasta and trinity went up about 25% so different counties doing strange things. I absolutely don't know how the LL the dogs get away with a possessery tax on a right(blue sky and bs) but whatever. Thanx Plumas as nice to know there is some sanity in kalif somewhere but bummer for the kids as art, music and sports dead, classes enlarged, teachers cut and classes too. Ifn' we can't teach the kids we'll be raising ignorant environutz!!!!! John

Hi John,
What you said I think it's absolutely spot on.
It is high time we did something about it.

something should have been done a looooooooooooooong time ago! but not enough miners would bother getting involved defending their own rights or much less informing the public about their rights being violated.. now its starting in oregon also the very same way! we will see if "we the people" are fed up enough yet!
