Mine subsidence damages Boonville home

BOONVILLE, Ind. — A home on Maxville Road in Boonville sits about three feet lower today than it did two weeks ago. Officials blame the problem on the collapse of an old mine shaft, believed to have been abandoned in 1899. And that may be just a piece of a much bigger problem.

Since 1890, when a vertical mine shaft was built near Newburgh, nearly every section of Warrick County has been mined for coal. In places where underground mines were used, there are now gaping holes under the foundations of hundreds of homes, schools and businesses.

Aja Mason, the curator of the Museum of the Coal Industry in Lynnville, Ind., said the problem of mine subsidence is only going to get worse.

yep, it was in todays paper about a Illinois school that sunk from a colapsing coal mine. they ended up sueing everyone that was involved in buying/building/researching the land for the school. they ended up building a cement plant there to fill in the old mines with concret.the court found against the school and they are applealing that ruling!what a mess! most of the midwest is over a mine or cave of some sort! youd think they would of had land subsidance insurance!

A huge part of Dayton Nevada sunk in the mid 80's and what a sight. Luckily I had sold my rental units earlier and got the LL outta there. Problem is--most of the old abandoned mines are just that--old and abandoned and those responsible long dead or disappeared to avoid prosecution. Not a cent to anyone and the game plays on-John :?

you just got to watch out. my town has a ton of mines under it. the sad part is trying to get the mine insurace for it. they know a big part of town has mines under it, so they try not to sell that stuff. built a new walmart when they were preping the ground for it they hit a old mine. took them forever to fill it back in. the strange part is the old walmart they built it buy cutting in to a hill. the old farm house had a well on top of the hill. that should of told them something. they had there parking lot blow up becouse of he water coming out of the ground. they had to cut dranage under the parking lot. now the stream that was at the back of the farm ground now runs 24/7.

Correct Nebraskadad, and an older movie about Evel Kneivel(Spelling?) that shows a town in Montana where he grew up,
a car is going along and drops out of sight when the ground gives way. Had forgotten about that until now.
