Chinese miner builds high-altitude experiment in Peru
MOROCOCHA, Peru (Reuters) - High in the Andes mountain range, a Chinese mining company is now in the housing construction and demolition business as it works to relocate a Peruvian town that sits in the way of its $2.2 billion Toromocho copper mine.

By late July, state-owned miner Chinalco says it will finish building a new city of paved roads and multi-story homes for 5,000 people currently living on the side of a giant red mountain of copper 15,000 feet above sea level.

Residents from the poor, ramshackle town of Morococha, where children attend school steps away from discarded mine tailings, will get access to amenities they currently lack, like modern water, sewage and electrical systems. They will all also own their homes and no one will need to pay rent.

Chinalco calls the new $50 million town the biggest privately funded social project in Peru's mining history and it may help the company avoid community opposition that has stalled other major projects, like U.S. miner Newmont's $4.8 billion Conga project in the northern Andes.

If Chinalco persuades residents to move to Nueva Morococha, or "New Morococha," 15 minutes away by car - a feat that is still not certain - it could change ideas about corporate responsibility as President Ollanta Humala struggles to resolve hundreds of conflicts over natural resources that threaten $50 billion in pledged private investments.

Brand new homes,away from the mine site,free and clear and jobs . That makes them in the top 10% of the country,doesn't seem to be such a bad deal BUT not my town, but that god forsaken country could sure use the $$$$$$-thanx much for the info-John

we had the state come in and say they were making a state park, started buying up land, left and right. some guys did not want to move but were finely forced out. the lake was built land flooded, all the old farm ponds were now stocked with fish and a few new ones made. all was good, stores, restaurants and a industry popped up around the lake catering to guys that fish and hunt. that was 1967

2010 along comes the state. they let a coal mine go on the properly with out public input. to "test" for coal. well since there mining right next to the land they know there is coal there. they had drilling rigs all over. the plan was to drain the lake, dig up the land. all with out public input. that went over like lead balloons when every one found out. there was 4k jobs built around the lake. the plan was free land closer to the capital the coal mine was "going to trade" more land for a bigger lake and wet lands leaving us high and dry. the battle cry from the Governor was it was going to bring jobs. 200 jobs in for 4k jobs lost. we have boat rentals, boat sales, bait shops, restaurants, hotels. all for the lake and they fill up every year for hunting season. they would all be empty

In about 1960 the Bureau of Reclaimation came in and blew up-then burned up and bulldozed into the river the righteous small town of Bagby on the Merced River here in kalif. Then Lake McClure was filled and our town was underwater--all of 5 times in 50 years--was it really necessary?? Historic town owned by John C. Pherhaps these folks in the possibly ancient town don't want to move, into these modern times. I would not. Political lies, political corruption, political money. I'd rather be a penniless goatherd in Brazil at this point
