Dead fish

Postby GoldBugBit » Sun Feb 28, 2010 2:30 pm

I used to fish a lot, but haven't in a dozen years or so since I took up prospecting and mining. Well, my son took me fishing this morning and guess what? We KILLED fish! That's the first time in a dozen years. And there were lots of others killing fish on the river besides us. I felt so bad that I may not fish again. I am going to go back to dredging and do something beneficial for the fish. Mike

Thanks Mike, makes me feel a little better. Image
I wish their were more like you that can step forward and admit they are the real killers of fish and stop the blaming of others.

I am the same way, have not fished since the mid 80's. Getting up close and personal with the fish just did something........

You guys make me feel like a heel! While I'm an avid fly fisherman, I catch and release, and only use barbless hooks. If I could afford a good dredge, it's possible I would change my point of view looking at them face to face.

I have not fished in years. every time i see a dnr officer, i ask him how is his pay. i had one day i was checked for fishing licennes 3 times with in a hour and haft. then a week later i was checked at a park lake. the officer did not check the illegals who had tow buckes full of under sized bass. when he came back around the lake i asked him why he did not check them. his answer was well we know they dont have a licennes and can not get one any way. now i know for a fact, the girls at walmart dont check if your a resadent, they also dont issue many non resadent licennes. so 20 bucks for a fishing licennes is no problem. all they want is your name and adress. a 2 month old cell phone bill works.

I read all of the previous posts and remember when we first swore off killing fish. Now please don't get me wrong as I still enjoy a good piece of salmon, red snapper or halibut but I just do not go fising anymore. I certainly support those who fish and hunt. It is just I had a moment, an epiphany, where I decided that those fish were more than....just fish.

The deciding moment was on a dredging outing on the Klamath River in the early 1990s. We have dredged a large hole and every morning as we waded out in our wetsuits a growing number of fish followed us into the hole. They did not pay much attention and kind of just hung around, that was until we started the dredge's engine. I sense that the vibration underwater was saying "breakfast" or "food source". As soon as we got to work with the nozzle these fish, some as big as three feet, would dart in front of us feasting on what living things we had uncovered in the overburden.

After the third day we began to recognize a few and there was the one with the split dorsal fin and another with a scraped lower jaw, a brownish one we called "Rusty" and even one we called "Ol One-Eye" for obvious reasons. Soon they were joined by "Murray" and "Roscoe" and "Slick Willie" You get the idea. Following this fish bonding both my dredge partner and I gave up going fishing. Cheers!
