Pump seal cross reference

Postby polekaat » Tue Aug 13, 2013 2:53 pm

The Keene pump that I bought last year, looks like a sprinkler when it's running, because of a bad seal. Does anyone know what pump seal that the Keene p350 uses? I know that Keene does not manufacture their own seals and use one built for another manufacturer. I was looking at a cross reference site ( http://www.ussealmfg.com/pdfs/US_Seal_M ... erence.pdf ) to see if I would get lucky and they'd actually have Keene listed.
I also looked in the Grainger catalog. Looks like I'm gonna have to remove the old one and just go to Grainger and see, since there are no mining stores in this part of the country.

Sounds like lots of effort in identifying the correct pump seal part number when you can simply call Pat Keene atKeene Engineering, 800-392-4653 and ask him to send you one. They aren't that expensive.

Polekat, I chased that squirrel around the tree for a long time and never did catch it. The seal is proprietary...that is not saying it's not out there being used in other application...it's just not easy to find and I could not.
Then I realized a Keene seal costs $30 and a seal from Grainger would probably cost $28...I gave up

Maybe Hoser could provide a part number for the ones he has lined up?

Here in Redding both Grainger AND King Bearings have closed their stores. I'll look to see if any spares still in box with ID. Never more expensive at either place as in my biz days that's where I'd buy them as their RETAIL was cheaper than Keene/others wholesale. I outsourced to mfgrs whenever possible to provide the lowest costs and ran 2 other mining shops outta business with my lowest price guarantees on anything from anybody-John

I'll probably end up ordering one from Keene. It's just that with shipping and the cost of their "kit", the seal will end up costing me over $65. I thought that was a bit steep. Especially the $15 shipping for such a small item.

The "kit" includes the seal assembly, the volute O-ring and a sleeve to help press the seal in.
If you have some large caliber sockets or are gentle with a drift punch you will not need the sleeve and the O-ring can usually be reused.
Just order the seal

I agree with Bonaro. He describes a method to "gently" install the pump seal with some simple garage tools. Also, fyi, Keene sells only the pump seal with out having to purchase the "pump seal installation kit"...and...you can save a few bucks there.

We've sold Keene pump seals for as long as we've been in business (22 years) and I recall one customer who also thought the seal price was way too high. He passed on purchasing one from our stock and spent days of research looking for a cheaper source. Finally located a hydraulic parts outlet that claimed they had the seal in stock but the store was located sixty miles south. He purchased the seal from the store and when he went to install it he discovered it was a foreign knock-off and the diameter was undersized by a few 1/00ths. Add up the gas, time and additional expense and when all was said and done, he spent a whole lot more on that seal than the Keene dealer price.
