I like turkey and turkey leftovers. 30 years ago I raised 2 dozen turkeys every year for a few years to sell at the fire department to my co-workers. I could walk out my back door and call them and the whole flock would come on the run. I'd buy them as tiny poults and then 2 days before thanksgiving I'd load them up in the camper shell on my 76 Ford Courier and take them for a ride to the butcherer. That was quite a sight. 24 huge, white turkeys going for a ride in the back gobbling all the way. I'd drop them off and go to the library to hang out about 4 hours and then go pick them up. They were a lot easier to handle going home.

The first year I had one that dressed out at 40 pounds. All of the toms were over 32 pounds and the hens were all in the 20+ range. The next year I bought them about a month later and they were smaller.

One year one got sick. I ended up taking him to the vet in a big cardboard box. Sitting in the waiting room with everyone he'd rustle and shake the box. Everyone was wondering what was in the box. Now that was funny. I had to nurse him back to health handfeeding him so he became a pet and was around a bunch of years until he died of old age. His name was, of course, Tom. Somewhere I have a picture of me standing next to my 3 year old son with Tom under my arm.
