New mining claims

Postby micropedes1 » Thu Oct 27, 2016 4:51 pm

I am filing paperwork on some new claims, 1/4 section at a time to cover 4 full sections. I guess my brain is getting foggy...but what are the side lengths? 2640 feet sound right? These are 160 acre claims.

Lode=600 x 1500 and placer 1/4 section =2640 x 2640 . Hope you find tons a au 2 u 2-John

I don't feel right questioning "the Hose" but for clarification purposes unless you are filing a association claim you can only file on 20 acres. With a association claim you can file to 160 acres but have to have 1 person per 20 acres. For a quarter section, 160 acres, you would need 8 people listed on the claim form.

If I'm wrong, please correct me. On our High Hopes it is 60 acres and we have 3 names on the claim.

These are Alaska state claims. Different rules, I guess. You can file on as many as you can afford. But the rental increases yearly.

Claims first. Concurrently working on permits. And then logistics of shipping BIG equipment to mining support central location. Remember the old adage of how to end up with a small fortune gold mining......first you start with a larger fortune..,

Your right on numbers of folks Leonard BUT question was size...I was always told-even back in the day in Alaska, all states you can claim in have same exact same rules?? Alaska has a huge lease system as shown on Gold Rush where money talks and you can get a huge amount of land for a designated amount of years. Mcps you say Alaska BLM has different regs??? :? John never too old to learn

You gentlemen have me questioning what I thought I knew. In 2000, Alaska adopted the PLSS system for all mining claims. Persuant to that, you can file 1/4 section and 1/4 - 1/4 claims on state and Alaska state selected lands. As many as you want (or can afford). $35 plus recording fees and rental for smaller ones. $140 plus recording fees and rental for the larger. (Actually closer to $65 and $165). Rental increases each year.

I looked back at some of my old claims. 1320 feet on a side for 1/4 - 1/4 claims, 2640 feet for 1/4 section claims.

BLM is federal and a whole different kind of animal.

660 x 1320 is a 20 acre claim---4 of these in any contiguous conformation= 1/8 section(640 acres in a section) but must meet side to side or end to end but not corners. Looking at BLM manual page 10 are the illustrations.

I concur concerning BLM claims. And labor performed on one claim counts toward all of them in a contiguous block.
That 1320x660 dimension is what we used to use on California River claims. But cannot dredge there anymore, so it is a mute point. Time to go play elsewhere (Alaska??)

This is a long way from the original question, isn't it?

"Old Style" Alaskan State administered Mining Claims - river is "centerline" and the claim is 660 feet on either side away from the river for 1320 feet along the river centerline. Roughly 1320 x 1320 overall but oriented to the centerline of the river. 40 acres.

New system - find the corner of the pre-determined N-S, E-W square claim with sides and top running N-S and E-W and 1320 feet on a side. Use a GPS to locate pre-determined corner locations. 40 acre claim. You can incorporate 4 X 40 acre claims into a 160 acre claim with a single filing requirement but 4xs rental fee. As many individual 40 or 160 acre claims as you can afford with filing (Recorder's Office) fees and BLM claim rental fees ($35 - $140 per year for 40 Acre and 4 xs for 160 claim. Variable rate of $35 for first 5 years, 2xs that for another 5 years and then double THAT after 10 years. Recording fees ~ $20+ per sheet being recorded.

Federal administered claims use Alaska State administered claim system with the old way very discouraged. Some states use that system of location and some don't - it's up to that state. No mining claims East of (about) The Mississippi River. $ fees for other states depend on the "official greed" of that state.

Just remember:

Us Alaskans have no fears
We give no damn for riches.
We spike our wine with turpentine
Us hardy sons of (female puppies).

Us Alaskans have no fears
We give no damn for trifles.
We hang our (spheres) upon the walls
And shoot at 'em with rifles.

8-) Thanks much for the education Joe, much appreciated as explains a lot. Different rules/fees amazing as no country wide homogeneous application of rule or law is crazy. John :?
