I think that the FOG's health is going down hill and can't do what we used to do. I know that's my case. The stamina to haul a dredge up and down the mountains just is gone. Back in the old days I was dredging at 11,000 feet and having no problem. Now I walk a ways and I sound like a steam engine. I had a great time when I could do it. Now I'm content to sit around with the wife and drive around looking at the wildlife. The animal wildlife.

I can still do most of what I could when I was younger, just not as fast. And if I spend a few days at hard manual labor, there will be painkillers involved afterward. Especially if I spend a full week in the seat of a bulldozer stripping overburden.

My get up and go got up and went.

I was determined to push back the ravages of time, but as I suspect most older guys have found, there comes a point where it is just not possible. For me its the legs. Of course my whole body complains mightily and aches are many with what used to be mild labor. But the legs make doing anything on uneven ground impossible, to the point of being dangerous. I am extremely unstable and I don't mean my mind. My walking or standing stability is severely compromised.

I guess that I'm one that is not going to give up(yet). Every day I'm climbing a hill of some sort. Many that are so steep that they are just slide rock. Still able to climb to the top of 6000' hills. Heading towards 72... lucky me!!

That sounds a lot like me Harry. At 71-72 I could do those things, although they were getting hard to do. But what a difference three years has made. I am now 75 and simple uneven ground or cobbles on a gravel bar are insurmountable. Matter of fact, as you have seen, walking in Walmart is out of the question, I have to have an electric cart because I can't walk very far. Just getting from the parking lot into the store under my own power is about it.

Perhaps you will be more fortunate in only having to deal with age related stuff. Mine is age related plus nerve degeneration in the legs and feet. Maybe I can find some cracks to clean out that are accessible to me this summer.

Jim, you had the unfortunate problem with the nerves... that didn't help. How is that implant doing anyway?

John.... A bad back is not good. Hope it works out eventually. I know the pain... Only so much pain you can put in the back of your mind and ignore.

Harry, the implant worked great in the beginning. But over time it his not doing well. I am working with the manufacturer to see if anything is wrong with the device. If noting is wrong with it then I have to go to my Neurosurgeon to see if the problem is medical. It just may be that the condition has worsened and is overpowering the implant.

It is much worse now than it was before the implant. I have to keep reminding myself that this implant was originally designed for back pain that could not be remedied by surgery. After it was put on the market and successful they found that it also worked for people with my medical condition. So I guess there is the possibility that my condition has got to the point where it overpowers the device.
