Relaxed elk

Postby golden optimist » Mon Mar 18, 2019 6:01 pm

Now this is a herd of "relaxed" elk. Not particularly afraid of humans. They are right next to the highway and just ignoring us.

It looks like they are not lacking feed. Lots of grass there and they look to be in good shape for late winter.

If you could hunt there it sure is an easy pack out.Almost as easy as a moose hunt I was along with50 years ago. The guy whose land we were on had an old Ford 9n with a 1/2 track. He drove right up to the moose and loaded it on a pallet on the 3 point. Good thing as it was a long hike to the road and -55 degrees.

We were back there 2 days ago. There were about 200 elk on both sides of the road and in the road. There were elk laying on the front porchs, in the patios, and laying next to the garages. In general just making themselves at home.

I wonder if any of them on the porch were invited in for dinner that evening? I thought I heard a firecracker go off. :D No I was just target practicing in the back yard.

The elk are still hanging out taking advantage of the green grass. We've seen herds as large as 300-400 elk. You can drive up to within 30-40 feet and they just ignore you. The pelicans showed up last week.

Worse yet, think of the trouble you would have cleaning up their mess with your pooper scooper. :D
