Completely different mining

And now for something way different than dredging. I took these pictures in 2008 when I visited my sister in Yucca Valley. Amboy is on Route 66. The desert is amazing but I wouldn't want to make a living prospecting it.

Traveling back and forth in the western desert states I have seen white "stuff" on the sides of some small ponds - exactly like these pictures. I just thought it was "Alkali" or something like that and since they were well fenced in I chose to just leave them alone.

Just got back from helping a friend move back to Tucson, Az. from Oregon. Didn't take the Interstate, all secondary roads. Saw lots of desert and lots of mining in it, including many many prospect holes. Saw two places with giant open pit Copper mines. One was in Yerington Nv. and the other one was outside of Tucson, Az. The over burden and tailing piles were simply enormous.

In the early 2000's I went to Oregon for a month at my parents house in Lebanon. I drove the 2 laners most of the time and really enjoyed the scenery. If you just drive the Interstate you really miss a lot.

Yes Leonard, you do miss a lot by driving the Interstate. I do Interstate if am in a hurry, but other than that I love the secondary roads. I have also found that even with secondary roads you can make good time if you take time to plan your route carefully. Many smaller roads can save time and distance by cutting diagonal to Interstate roads to get to a destination.
