We saw a herd of about 150 elk the other day. They were mostly just standing in the road for about 10 minutes. They were looking at us looking at them A few of them were all collared up in their finest jewelry / collars, They are fun to watch as they just ignore you until they decide to move on. They have several large herds here around Loveland/

We don't see, or possibly have large herds here in NorCal. Most are just a few animals.

Years ago I was visiting friends in Denver (one of 'em was Leonard) and later on in the visit I ended up, just at sundown, driving outside Breckenridge.

Tons of BIG elk herds suddenly appeared grazing on fields outside town and then after stopping and looking at them, until the sun finally went away, we all decided to head into town to get something to eat. It turned out that thee entire town had been invaded by hundreds and hundreds of them and all the traffic was literally at a standstill, while all the locals rubber necked just like tourists. Every tree, bush and lawn was in the act of getting shorter and shorter and even the little guys got into nibbling the front yards of the houses. The critters that weren't eating were sauntering in all directions up and down the streets, denying any car right-of-way.

After a few hours they were gone as quietly as they arrived.
