With that high of voltage I would tend to think it has something to do with electrostatics or EM radiation and not electromagnetic detection methods (like metal detectors).

Either inducing a charge instead of inducing a magnetic field and detecting the charge in some manner, or doing something involving EM radiation like radio waves, except using different frequency or a wideband range from an electric discharge like through a spark gap or something maybe? High frequencies don't penetrate ground too well though.

THERE ARE MANY THINGS THAT HAPPEN AND MANY THINGS THAT EXIST THAT ARE NOT EXACTLY EXPLAINABLE. WITHOUT A OPEN MIND YOU ARE MIRED IN IGNORANCE AND STUPIDITY. I have seen it work with 100's a witnesses in a public meeting and I hardly believe Al planted all that gold a million or so years ago. Need and NOT greed seems to me to be the litmus test. My Mom had a doctrine in the metaphysical sciences from the Church Of The White Light in Padadena so I saw PLENTY of strange unexplainable things through out my life.
