yep i remember when i only had 7 days togo! what a total releif it was! none of this ,i gotta do this or that stuff. heck theres always someone else todo it then! the only thing i regreted from retireing is leaving the best boss i ever had to deal with that place. i really enjoyed working for/with him and i told himso many times.he really was a nice guy to do that with! 1 year after i retired, he transfered back to his eng. job from maitainance at Boeing. now hes happier and a lot less stress!

Leonard and Russ,

If you guys are really planning a meet up in Nebraska let me know..
Weather had a bite in the air last yesterday afternoon.. Last year at this time we had a foot of snow on the ground.

Weather is looking good into next weekend at least.

Who governs the mining here in Nebraska? Are permits required?

Tim, probly do a search through the Nebraska department of Natural Resources. look in their files for this info before asking them anything. remember that most of it would be on private property and written permission is a biggie!

Who governs it? if you are talking commercial mining it is landowners and Nebraska Department of Natural Resources..

There is some exploration in the area we prospect for the "rare earth minerals" the depth they are talking is below the limestone cap, at 300-1200'
http://www.quantumrareearth.com/ At Depth resources are "owned" by the state and permits are required for removal. I don't know the details of that.

In terms of recreation including recreational prospecting, the authority is the land owner adjoining the river..

The Natural Resource District, generally the NRD, and NDEQ are concerned with water usage and quality, sand and gravel operators have EPA discharge issues to deal with in terms of proper settling of effluent prior to discharge.

We are surface scratching in the river, and access to Nebraska Rivers is generally considered public with landowner permission. We barely moving a 1/4 yard of material in a day's effort.

We have no desire to setup a commercial venture.

Tim, Drop me an email, if you are in the Omaha area we may be planning for another trip before the ice comes. It is definitely not CO or WY stuff, it is very miniscule amounts comparatively. But at least it fun on the weekend.

We do have a couple locations we can go to, and we have permission from the land owner for about a 6 mile stretch of one of the forks the Nemaha. we have to play by the pack it in, pack it out rules.. During hunting season we don't go do because the land owner leases out the hunting privilege and as a courtesy
(and safety) we avoid it.

I talked to a guy from NDEQ a few years ago, he said dredggeing is OK just don't dig in the banks. There isnt any worries about dredging in Nebraska, heck no one would expect any dredging here so why would they bother regulating it.

I'll join you guys if you plan on coming to Nebraska.
Rex ,I found a new place we need to prospect on the Nemaha, I named it "The Eagles Nest" for obvious reasons. Looks promising but needs a lot more investigation.
