Yea, I think it has to do with inclusions on an atomic level like in the hope diamond.

Actually there are 2 bands of UV light and diamonds in the rough flouresce MUCH more than cut and the proper band-John Sorry ol'man has a brain fart and doesn't remember which is best ho or low band??sorry

I have one of those big lanterns with both long and short wave lamps. I can't tell much difference as they seem to react to both. Some appear a little more greenish blue than straight blue.

Good to hear, I only have the cheep long wave kind and had wondered if I would miss some diamond them. I hope they come out with LEDs that can emit shortwave without destroying themselves, would make short wave lights a lot cheaper.

Uncut glow the best and brightest-something in that slick semi greasy coating on them from the kimberlite or creation process?? John

The glow actually comes from impurities in the diamond itself. I think if they're uncut there's just more surface area (and chance of the impurities in the subsurface (vs the core stone) for the light to work on.
